So yesterday I went to one LFS and the guy literally laughed at me when I told him we were doing a fishless cycle. Then tonight my husband went to a different LFS and the guy there also said it was crazy. He said we must be chatting with a 90 year old aquarist online that doesn't know anything. I am irritated because EVERY site says that fishless is the best way. It is so frustrating to get so many conflicting views on the same topic. I just wanted to vent and know that I'm doing the right thing!

You are following the correct path! Patience is the key!

Any questions, just post here!

People have a difficult time looking at an empty tank for a month or so, getting some established media will speed things up. there is no reason to harm fish, and the work involved in a fishy cycle once the readings start to spike is incredibale.........:)

Today the LFS guy told me female bettas were not compatable. Haha. I got them anyway.

Someone needs to talk some sense into the LFS guys, whether about stocking, cycling, compatability...

It just shows their ignorance. You're on the right track!

I'm LOLing at them. Cycling with fish is ancient history. Fishless is the way to go. These employees are probably self-proclaimed 'experts', too.
Many times I'll go into LFS's and act ignorant just to test their knowledge. There are a few very knowledgeable employees out there, but the majority I run across don't know much if anything at all.

Ah... you see they can't sell fish for a fishless cycle... so therefore they don't agree or like it.

I'm for cycling with plants.

If you are willing to do a lot of water changes..you can cycle with fish.
fishless cycles are a great way to cycle.
if you have a reliable source for bacteria..you can cycle with media from an established tank( I use filter squeezins)
they all work but the easiest are using bacteria or cycling fishless.

If you ask me.. if the folks at the lfs were gearing towards fish cycling..then it seems that the LFS is the one who is in the stone age.

I woul dhave suggested that maybe they do some reading up.
