Is a tank cover always needed?

You don't have to...though many folks do to minimize evaporation, stop jumpers from getting out, or to keep stray things from getting in. Ensure what ever light you do put over a lid less tank has something to keep the moisture of the bulbs and connections.

Nope. Almost all of my tanks are topless. BUT I don't keep anything that's prone to jumping and I do have a fair amount of evaporation.

I agree with everything Bbishop mentioned, plus, it's a convenient place to put the different food containers on, as I'm feeding them and I have a great deal of evaporation in mine. I have to top them up almost every day in the colder months because I have the gas fireplace on a lot to keep the dampness out of the rec-room in the basement.

thank you all so much for the input. i was freaking there for a minute after I opened a new hood I just got for my temporary tank. It says that it is not to be used over open water. Being a hood I found this odd, isn't that what a hood is for? The light fixture sits above an acrylic panel. I was so confused.

This hood is ok to use without a tank cover right?
