Is a water filter like this any good?

I know that I should use RO water in my reef tank, but the cost (especially here in Australia) is prohibitive.

Would a filter such as this one do a good enough job of removing the nasties from tap water?

Thanks,
Chris

It depends on what all you're filtering your water for. If you need to remove phosphates and nitrates, that filter won't help, sorry. If you're wanting to remove solid contaminates, microbes, and chlorine, it will work fine. Without knowing what needs to come out, it's hard to say if it will work or not. It will not give you similar results to RO, though. RO filters remove pretty much all impurities, including elements that contribute to GH and KH.

I DIY'd a similar system using parts from my local hardware store--I'm mostly worried about removing sediment, some heavy metals and chlorine. Cost about $100 to setup a 3 chamber system, and the filters are replaced about every 500 gallons.

Thanks for your feedback OrionGirl.
Yes, I want to remove solid contaminates, microbes, and chlorine as you mentioned. I think I should be able to keep phosphates in check with regular water changes.. or have I missed something?

I didn't think I was up for DIY'ing an RO system and it was a pretty good price... so it's currently on its way downunder. :)

If the phosphates are high in your water, water changes won't work to keep them low. So, talk to the utility and see what they average. If it's less than 1 ppm, you shouldn't have to worry about them much.
