my father is building me an amazing showcase stand and hood for my new 135 tank.

today he went to my local fish shop to look at a stand for ideas.

while he was there he got to talking to the guy working (whom i really like and trust his opinion) and my father told the guy it was a 135 gallon glass tank.

well, the guy told him that the tank would last for 8 years and then it would absolutely start leaking. i don't really think this is true...but i thought i would ask all of you wise people for your opinion.

if this is true, would it do me some good to re-silicone it before i set it up?

ive had a 40 gallon for 18 years org caulking

While I think the point of view he gave you is false, There could be reasons why a tank would start leaking after several years. But I think most of them are from unintentional abuse.

Maintaining water levels low, consistently, with high wattage lamps, causing silicone to harden and crack, and cause an upper leak.

Physical abuse such as dropping rocks large driftwood pieces while rearranging/cleaning. This damage may not show up for awhile.

Attempts at moving the tank when not fully drained and supported improperly.

Shifts in flooring and structure from age or seasonal heating/cooling, changing how the tank is level.

well i agree that of course a tank could start leaking at anytime regardless of age.

but it just seemed so false, that it could be true, and thank you all for clearing this idiotic statement up for me.

You think the guy at the LFS was trying to discourage your dad from building the stand so he would buy one from them. Maybe basically telling your dad that he couldnt build one to support it, therefore it would start to leak in a few years?

hmm well i had thought that maybe he was trying to sell my dad an acrylic tank because he kept telling him how durable they were and how they lasted forvever.....
