is it normal for some fish to lose some of their fins over time or is that fin rot? my convict in the 30 gallon will lose some fins over time and then heal and then lose it again. it doesnt have any more agressive tank mates. only 1 silver dollar

sounds like fin rot to me, too. It's definitely not normal.

What are your water parameters (ammonia/nitrite/nitrate)? What else do you have in there? How long has the tank been set up?

ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate .15ppm
this tank has been set up for about 3 weeks now
the fin rot thing is not that major its only about a grain of rice size taken of. is it fin nipping?

oh, good. I imagined the whole fin just gone. Is nitrate 15 ppm? Nitrate tests don't normally read less than 1 ppm.

It's only been set up 3 weeks? You should still be cycling. Did you use seeded media or something (like borrow a handful of gravel or a filter sponge)?

oh, gotcha. That would explain it. You think the silver dollar bit the convict? Have you seen any chasing or other aggressive behavior?

not really i would see the silver dollar bite the convict accidentaly while feeding on few occasions and who knows when the light goes off. the nitrate is 15ppm

For what it's worth, my Silver Dollars would nip my Angelfish at feeding time. I ended up having to remove them and set them up with their own tank.
