Vegetarians, if they know what they're doing, can pull it off with no detriments to their health. Its the uneducated vegans that don't know what foods to eat to get certain nutrients that are skinny and malnourished. Ever hear about the vegan couple who killed their baby by putting it on a strictly vegan diet (flax and stuff like that)?

As for the Atkins diet, its a wad of B.S.
There is initial weight loss, but its all water and you gain it back anyways.

Oh yeah, i love fish... especially sushi and sashimi. mmmm But, it all depends on how its prepared.
As for my aquarium fish, they're cool i like them lots. If they die, i'd be chocked as hell cuz they cost a fortune, but no tears shed.

that right there is a load of bs. Atkins does work. Its just way over used now and people are abusing the diet. People seem to think that they can eat what ever they want and as long as there are no carbs they will be fine. As I heard one dr say, "even if you aren't counting calories your body is." people who dont' do the diet right, then get fed up with it and leave it before they should see a gain back. But people who do it right have long term success.

If you want to be a vegetarian, I commend you. Just please don't say that it's wrong to eat animals and try to push your views on others (this is not directed at anyone on the board, just a generalized statement.) I am a deer hunter, and am tired of people in my university chastising me for it. My least favorite comment--"You can't eat deer, they're cute. Eat chickens, they're ugly." Wow, I was amazed at that one. Anyways, sorry to go off on a little rant. Hope everyone is having a great night:)

Alright, weight loss... a bit, healthy? ABSOLUTELY NOT

Dr. Atkins "revolutionary diet"
Main premises of his diet
1)consume <20-50g carbs per day
2)no limit on fat or protein intake
3)promise rapid weight loss
4)appealing because it allows you to eat all the high fat foods you want.

Lowering your carb intake that much will significantly lower your daily intake of energy. Any diet that lowers energy will make you lose weight. The atkins diet makes your body go into a state of ketosis which inhibits appetite therefore lowering energy intake.

With such an unbalanced diet you eventually become vit E, vit A, folate and calcium deficient, not to mention dietary fiber and numerous other nutrients. Huge amounts of saturated fats are consumed= high risk of CVD. Dehydrates your body, you pee more to try to excrete the protein overload and you greatly increase your risk of kidney disease. That said, most of this won't happen after a day or two, but over time.

Main point. Diets don't work. Not only the Atkins diet, any diet.
The only way to lose weight and become healthy is through healthy eating and exercise.

spartan, how long does it take for those things to happen? last i heard, there are no long term studies of the harms of atkins. But basically, if you loose weight and correctly get off the diet by slowly introducing whole wheat, you are lowering your risk for a lot of problems down the road including heart disease and diabetes. Diets are short term intended for long term results. Its better than starving yourself, living on apples and lattes like Christian Bale did for that Machinist movie.

"healthy eating" is another way to say "diet".

A quick google search came up with this.

I didn't read the whole thing but would like to emphasize this

The bad news is the increased risk to an individual's health. For example, if the body is burning large amounts of fats without sufficient dietary carbohydrates, the body produces ketones. These ketones produce side effects such as headaches, dehydration, bad breath and nausea. Over time "health care professionals fear bone loss, muscle breakdown and kidney disease" as a result of low carb diet induced ketosis, reports Ann Saul Dudrich of the Tribune-Review.

An additional side-effect of the low-carb diet is an increased risk for heart attack. Although two recent studies in the Annals of Internal Medicine found that low carb diets do not increase LDL or bad cholesterol levels long term, doctors still acknowledge the increased risk of heart attack. One of the authors of this study, Frederick F. Samaha, believes that "Odds are" a low-carb diet that is high in fat is going to increase the risk of heart attack.

Yet it turns out that Dr. Atkins, who lived the low-carb lifestyle for decades, experienced artery blockages that are typically attributed to "high-fat, high-cholesterol diets" (read more). Dr. Atkins' downfall is not the only that may be attributed to the diet. The irregularities in Rachel Huskey's electrolytes, a 16-year-old who favored the Atkins diet, ended up killing her. Other individuals' bad experiences, including Huskey's, can be found here.

This last one sums it up pretty good

I don't completely agree with that. I was on a diet very similar to the Atkins and lost 40 pounds. I've kept it off. Like I say, it isn't the Atkins, but something very similar.

Now, yes. I think it is okay to eat fish.

Pretty much the only fish I refuse to eat is shark of any type. They are quickly becoming depleted.
