Is it possible to have a female Black Convict with no orange coloring anywhere? I supposably received a female Convict from a friend the other day, well now it's been 2 or 3 days and she has no orange on the tummy area at all. Not even 1 scale on either side.
The only different then my male of the same size is her tail fins are not quite as long.
Oh and the fact that the male doesn't like her one bit and has not been friendly at all to her.
I dont have a picture to show. But is it possible he gave me a male and tried to pass her off as a female since she came in a bucket?

After 2 days in the 30 gallon and today being alone all day I would think the female would show some kind of orange coloring but so far tonight there still isn't even 1 scale of orange on her anywhere.
The only real difference between this so called female I got from another person and my male is that her tail fins are just a bit shorter and she is less agressive as he is and basically hides from him when he was in the tank.
She is 3 inches or more long and the little 1 inch juvie has way more orange then she does. Could it be I was given a timid male, and was just told it was a female? I dont have pictures to show.

(its a male) one thing about cons the females will most def sport the orange / red coloration on the side flanks this also explains the non interest from your previous male..

I agree with Pitbull. You also need to be aware that cichlids of any sort will often have sub males that act like a female and have finnage without the female orange. There are also Dom. females if there is no Dom male in the shoal.

Well Thanks this does explain why the male was so put off by the so called female and harrassed it into hiding behind the filter water flow.
I do have another female sporting the orange coloring but she is just a littler over an inch in size. Will she be ok to put with the 3 inch male? When she was in there a few days ago she was trying pair up with him and followed his every move. I thought she was to small so I took her out and placed her with a male her own size.

actually she will be just fine but keep a close eye on her and a spare tank ready

Thanks I think I will take the juvie female Convict out of the 10 gallon and do another switching around of everyone and place her back into the 30 gallon with the 3 inch male and watch and see what happens this weekend when I have time to just sit and watch everyone. That way if there is agression to her I can quick get her out.
Now what wil I do with the 3rd male? Maybe I can post an add on freecycle and see if anyone wants her.

well do you have larger cichlids??? i think she would make a tasty treat but you could always donate her to your LFS

I do have an Oscar but he wont eat them that big. I have 2 other males I switch on and off that are the same size he wont touch them.
I do have one LFS that might take it, I'd have to ask them. I've asked friends and even put this fish on freecycle to give away no-one wants it.
I'm frustrated here.

thats the thing with convicts I heard someone say there the knew age " feeders"
