DO NOT feed a puffer a goldfish, unless you want the puffer to die too. Goldfish are fatty and un-nutritional, there is no beneficial reason to feed the goldfish to another fish. JUST RETURN IT. To even suggest killing a healthy animal could get you banned. Or even worse, have more than half of the boards population run you out of town.
I would certainly hope that isn't the case!!!!!!!!!!!
And one healthy goldfish certainly won't cause your friends puffer to up and die so I would say that's a much better option than just eliminating it with no purpose at all. Just for the record I don't consider goldfish to be a good food item.
Otherwise:
Personal attacks aren't really called for here. Ultimately, the decision is excaliburjb's
Do I believe it is a good idea to euthanize a healthy animal? Not really, but that's me. I would make EVERY effort to find a home for the goldfish somewhere else first... If all options are exhausted, then it's always an option I suppose... It's really your call - I'm in no position to attempt to impose my moral beliefs on others.
I agree with you 100%, but the very topic and first post "Is it wrong to..." make it a question of morality.
Is it wrong to euthanize a healthy fish? Yes. There are a slew of options available including: donation to a school, friend, lfs, feeder...
Yes, goldfish are terribly poor nutritionally, but so is chocolate cake, that doesn't stop me from having a second healping, just don't base the diet on it.
1. You should not feed a puffer fish, especially goldfish.
2. The best advice would be to get ahold of an elementary school or post a bulletin at a local pet store...actually, even ask the LFS to adopt the fish out.
Please don't kill it. I understand how ridiculous goldfish can be comparable to other fish, I own a tank full of them for the sake of my daughter's enjoyment. However, your post reminded me of an article I just read about an art exhibition that let you decide whether you would kill the goldfish or not...interesting read. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3040891.stm
If you were closer to me, I'd take the lousy goldfish off your hands...
.... or for your food..... or for your shoes... or any of a number of items you touch/use in any given day. Those animals aren't sick either.
Feeding the fish to another fish... I believe that's probably a "morally acceptable" option to most. Besides possible nutritional value, I don't believe there is any difference between feeding a fish a goldfish or a $0.05 feeder fish besides the price? ... They're both healthy fish, no?
