Hi Friends,

One of my LFS has the following Moss varieties for sale -

1. Java Moss
2. Christmas Moss
3. Spiky Moss

Just wanted to know if Moss is easy to grow in low-tech setup ? Also I've never ever bought or kept any moss type so just wanted to request if anybody can kindly guide me on how to plant it in the tank. I mean, I know that its to be tied to the rocks or wood but the moss comes as a ball or a clump of several strands. So do I just clump it together and tie it around a rock or do I have to arrange the individual strands and then ties them as a group to the rock. Will this lead to a more organised / natural looking better growth ? Kindly guide me regarding this...

Also which of the above 3 types of moss is the hardiest and fast grower ? Kindly guide me...

Thanks a lot !

Java moss is very easy to grow in a low light setup. Its undemanding. I haven't kept the other two, but I have kept flame moss and taiwan moss in low light and they grew, slowly but they grew. They seem similar to those two. You do want to flatten it out as much as possible. You don't have to go frond by frond, but the larger the surface area, the quicker it will fill in over time.

Hi there !

Thanks a lot for the kind reply and for guiding me. I will go for Java Moss then...

Just wanted to request you - I will be really grateful if you can kindly guide me step by step and explain a little on how to tie the Java Moss to a rock. Also it will be very kind and helpful of you, if you can kindly show me a pic on how the Java Moss looks when its growing well and established.

Kindly advice... Thanks again !
Have a great weekend !

I used fishing line and wrapped it around the driftwood a bunch of times, then i went back through the "loops on the bottom of the wood (formed from wrapping it around the wood) a few times then made a knot. Pull the two ends tight. Make sure you leave enough line at the beginning so you have enough line to tie the two ends together. I'm sure there is an easier way, but im not good with knots and it did work for me. Someone else on here might be able to give an easier way/better directions.

Dark cotton is also good.
Some people say if you cut the moss into smaller pieces, it will grow faster.
I have a few sorts in my low-tech tanks; I think it does better when up close to the lights, if it is just average lighting levels.
It doesn't grow very fast for me, but it does grow.
I've noticed from other people's posts that some people can't grow moss at all, and for others it grows like a weed, and sometimes it's hard to tell why. Of the sorts I have, Fontinalis seems to grow the best, but that doesn't help with your options.

Here are some pictures of java moss growing on a pond stone which is a little smaller than golf ball size. I didn't tie it on, I simply wrapped a little of the moss around the stone and set it down. Here are some pictures as you requested - hope they help! IMG_1221.JPG
