I have my first tank and added 5 Zebra Danios to start my cycle. They have been in for 3 weeks and recently I noticed that one of them has gotten much larger than the others and has a different shape to it's belly. I was hoping someone could tell me if this was a pregnant female, a physical difference between males and females or a sign of some type of illness/parasite etc. Here are two pics: The first just shows the distended belly area, the second is with another Danio that has a different shape, all 4 of my others are the slimmer versions, only the one has the "budda belly" Thank you!

How often/ what are you feeding? I have some danios in a 10 in my office. They had a guest BGK for a bit and I had a hell of a time feeding it. The danios would eat all his food and end up looking like the one in your pic. It was due to over eating. The ghost was only there while another tank cycled, and when he was removed the danios went back to thier regular feeding regimen, and thier regular size/shape.

Depends, how long has she been fat? Zebra's dont keep the eggs inside long...they lay them pretty soon after the act and they will hatch in a day or so. So i'm betting shes eaten to much.

Look at your fish in bright light. You should be able to see through the fish almost if you look up at the fish, with your eyes pointed toward your lights. A pregnant zebra danio will have a pinkish area just infront of the last bottom fin. Some danios will also appear to be bleeding from that area indicating that they are pregnant.

I couldn't get it to be still long enough to check for a pink spot. I don't think I'm feeding too much, just 4-5 flakes of TetraMin twice a day. I'm going to try cutting that back a bit and feeding it at 2 ends of the tank at once. Maybe if the fatty is out fighting the others for grub that will help.
