I have had a 24" peice of driftwood from the LFS in my tank for 2 weeks. It is not floating as strong as when I first put it in but still floats. There is a slate piece on the bottom.

BumBumBee, I've had the same prob -- right from the LFS.
The wood needs water. Boiling should help some... Other than that, it can be a waiting game, not a weighting game! LOL :D HTH

I would hollow it out and inject the hollow part with lead (not really).

I've heard of the weight treatment suggested here, and all my books say that it worked well for the authors, but I suspect that there are a few more tricks as not all driftwood is created equally.

if you have one of those vaccum pack at home machines you can put the driftwood in one of those special vaccum pack bags filled with water and suck the air out filling the now empty spaces in the wood with water.

I had the same problem. I had origionaly went out and got 10 lbs of slate tiles and screwed them to the wood. i then put about 30lbs of gravel on top. It still floated. What I did was I found a type of slate tile that was 1" thick and weighed about 25lbs each. I used two of these and it worked. I reccomend looking for some of this really thick and heavy tile.

The wood will eventually soak up enough water to limit it's bouyancy, but other than boiling and waiting, there is little else you can do. Unless you want to drill thousands of little holes in the back side that you won't see to let the water reach deeper into the wood. I have never tried the "space-seal" vacuum bags, but I would be aprehensive to spend the money to try it . . .
