I just bought 30 lbs. of live rock off craigslist cuz i have a small budget.
All of the rocks are mostly white with some patches of green algae. His tank had broke and the rocks were kept in a tub of water with heat, light and power head. I thought something was wrong because the rocks weren't red and purple like I had seen in stores. But there was no foul smell (which i read about) so i went ahead and bought it.

Then I go and read about how the white stuff is just dead stuff?... and i should remove it b/c of the ammonia itll add to the tank? Then its not soft stuff... its hard and i'd have to scrape it off if anything...

HELp!!

besides the coraline the bacteria inside and one the rock is what makes it truely lr. sound like he did the right thing so it should be alive. dont worry about coraline. given time with proper calcium levels you will see it start to appear. I bought some LR that sat in a garge for abut 2 months with no water after about 6 months in my tank i noticed coraline starting to grow. It just takes time for the coraline.

Coraline is the red/ purple color ?

So all the white stuff is dead then?

should i just leave it? or remove it, like i said its very hard to take off.

No reason to remove it--I doubt it's dead, just not colored up. Very common for coralline to bleach if it's in the dark, but given proper conditions, it will brighten up just fine. You'll need to a food source to keep the bacteria alive--I'd plan on a full cycle, just to be sure. Other organisms on the rock may come back as well, just depends. Basically--anything hard enough to require serious scrubbing to remove isn't bad and won't cause a problem, so no need to scrub.

Ahh, thanks steph and ORION...

About food for the bacteria, should i go buy a cocktail shrimp?

That will work, as would a chunk of raw fish, or some fish food--or pure ammonia.

If you want to speed the process along wait until one your locol places gets there live rock shipment in. Go in a get a few pounds of nice fresh lively pieces to seed the older rock. Even a couple little 1# rocks will speed it along.

And yes, use the shrimp method to feed the bacteria,
