I'll chime in on the plecos...LOL
do the research..many smaller pleco's do a fine job on algae..some may require wood as they need the wood fibre to maintain a healthy digestive system.
clowns are one species that needs driftwood in the tank..cute lil buggers when they aren't hiding..LOL
also the bn (bristlenose) another one good at helping to reduce algae.
not all plecos will get large..check out Planet catfish for a ton of information on these babies.
