aside from 'venting', there's no way to accurately distinguish males from females at that size.

There are two openings in front of the anal fin in all fish; one is the vent, one is the anus. The vent, often called the ovipositor in females, is the opening from which eggs or sperm are shed.

Both males and female have genital papillae which are different shapes in males and females - in general, males have pointed genital papillae, to facilitate the deposition of sperm over the eggs, and the female ovipositors are broad and flattened to facilitate egg laying.

Venting is often a more reliable method of determining the gender of a fish by examining the proportionate size of the two openings near the anal fin. The opening closest to the anal fin is the vent ... in males the vent is roughly the same size as the anus and in females the vent looks larger than the anus.

naturally there are species specific variations to this rule and you need to look at a lot of fish to become 'conversant' in the "art".

thanks .. i thought one way to tell was there fins .. that the males had longer more pointy flowing fins and bigger lips ..i know they both get the humps on there heads ..

thanks for the info ..

I have saw a really dark red one that looked really nice

Yes Marn Personality+ the red devils , I have recently bought a 10"+ red devil in a 4' tank , always looking for attention and re aranging everything in "His" Tank (Think its male) gets realy annoyed if you move things around in the tank , defends the teritory and moves it all back .
Once he has got to know you he will let you stroke him (If in the mood) but always have to be carefull of the front end of him , will give a nasty bite if given the opertunity
wouldn't trade him tho, hes an entertaining member of the family now.
We have another tank with various tropicals in it , nice to watch but never as much fun as "George" & his constant activitys

Yeah, i have a Red Pingpong Flowerhorn that looks exactly like your fish. Well i was under the impression that a Flowerhorn was what i was buying. None the less, it is one of my favorite fish...Besides my 15 month old Oscar of course. Anyway, how old is your Red Devil? I've had mines for about 5 months and it's now about 3" long and fat. What does this fish look like when full grown.

Well, i don't know yet because i have just purchased it... i will post some pics when i get a chance though... he's/she's about a 3 incher right now... you know what, when i went to my LFS the other day, i checked out the tank with a flowerhorn heading but then there was about three fishes there that looked like midas cichlids... so maybe these are the other fishes that have came out from the hybridization....
