Is my water bad?

that's an idea... there are 3 of them, each about 5x7" in size...

If I remove one at a time would the ph go down on it's own gradually, or would a water change be required to alter current ph?

Once one is removed is should go down a bit, especially after a water change. My plan of attack would be to remove one then do a normal water change 2-3 days later. 2-3 days after that water change I'd remove another rock and so on. Of course it will probably be helpful to monitor pH the whole time too but I would think that should do it very gradually.

Edti: I should add that removing the rock won't be like magic. Removing it will take away the source of the base material making your pH rise but it won't get rid of the material already in the water. That's where the water changes come in.

The pH would likely level off. The water would reach an equilibrium at which the pH and KH was such that further dissolution would no longer happen, or at least not to any noticeable amount.

Taking out rocks at a time would only slow the amount of time to reach said equilibrium.

Do you have any vinegar? That's an acid, albeit dilute and weak. I don't know if it's strong enough, but it may be worth a try. It would certainly show a strong positive, but not necessarily useful in ruling them out...

I'm thinking that if it was the rocks, you should have seen an increase in KH.

Thanks guys (happychem, are you a chemist 'in real life'??)...

I have a couple more rocks like the ones in my tank, and I have gallons of vinegar (I clean with it)... Tara the Mad Scientist will be at work tonight.

I think I may just take them all out at one time, then do a little water change tonite (10%), test water tomorrow and Sunday and if the ph hasn't started dropping maybe I'll do another small one on Monday.

What would I do without this board? :p

Coulda been. Finished my undergrad then went on into Chemical Oceanography for post-grad work. I'm starting to miss chemistry again. Maybe after I finish up here and do some real work I'll go back for my PhD, but who knows...
