Is one person's moral opinion as good as another's?

No we don't. So moving right along please!:)

Way to go, Leo. Now you've gone and made me think!

I got to thinking about the insistence of some that morals are shaped by religion. Then I got to thinking about the example of Hinduism and cows showing that fundamentally, the morals of different societies are the same its just that the "facts" are different.

I propose that rather than forming our morals through our religions, we form our religions from morals. Think about it, morals are just som abstract, difficult to explain, preprogrammed code. Religion is a wonderful way of explaining these morals into a lifestyle.

Its through religion and culture that those morals become skewed by the "facts" of those cultures and religions which brings us to this debate. So, underneath it all, everyone morals are valid and just as good as the others but because their background has provided them with different "facts", they will naturally differ.

Okay, I need to lie down now.

Morals don't come from US......the reason we all have the same basic moral thoughts/foundations about what's right and what isn't....is because those standards come from one source......... :D

OK..I'm not going to mention where I think they come from....lol.....

That is indeed one of the theories mentioned in my texts.

Emg, I thank you for your "restraint";) Did you expend the extra energy by selecting new smilies:D

I'm pooped on the subject for now. I just spent two and a half hours in class proposing my views and listening to others so we could better shape our argument.

He's great. We just went out last night for our first dinner out without him. Grandma and grandpa were all too willing to watch him for a few hours. It was tough for my wife but she needed the night out.

Right. I think we both believe that's the same source but that would be one of those personal "facts" that others see differently which is why their morals are just as valid. :)

Here's my all time favorite quote on morality:

Moral certainty is always a sign of cultural inferiority. The more uncivilized the man, the surer he is that he knows precisely what is right and what is wrong. All human progress, even in morals, has been the work of men who have doubted the current moral values, not of men who have whooped them up and tried to enforce them. The truly civilized man is always skeptical and tolerant, in this field as in all others. His culture is based on "I am not too sure."
