Is salt Ok for these fish?

Jpap, the trouble for the most part is people forget about dissolution. Always dissolve the salt when you attempt to treat your fish with it. Grains of salt settling to the bottom will indeed burn their skin. Bottom dwellers ae the most vulnerable to such damage which is why always dissolve the salt thoroughly before adding to the tank.
 
Thank you, I was VERY careful to dissolve the salt completely, also I added it to my tank slowly. I have seen HUGE improvements today. Almost all of the ICK has fallen off of the tetras and catfish, no other fish are infected thus far. My understanding is that the next few days is when it's most important to keep up with the salt and heat to kill the Ick that has now fallen onto the gravel.

I am so grateful for this website. If I would have listened to the aquarium store, there would be copper sulphate treatment in my tank right now :hypnotized:
 
Bear in mind that the ick would drop off anyway; it only spends a few days on the fish. The important thing is killing the parasite whilst it's freeliving in the water so that the fish are not reinfected.

Yep, I know! Am I correct in thinking that I should continue the salt and heat treatment for 7 days after the Ick is no longer visible?

True, but this gets twisted into no salt for any bottom dweller which leads hobbyists to buying, for the most part, unnecessary medications. ;)
 
Some people seem to jump to reductio ad absurdam simplifications - hence you get "1" per gallon", "no salt for bottom dwellers", "salt tolerant/intolerant fish" and all the rest. It's as if they can't cope with shades of grey and graduations.
 
Everything is going good. I still see a couple of specks on the fish, but I'm thinking it may be "exit wounds" from the Ick falling off of the fish. I will give it 7 more days of heat and salt and then I'm hoping that we're in the clear. Thanks again everyone for all your help. I am happy to see that no other fish have come down with Ick and the salt/heat treatment appears to be working with no stress to the fish at all. You guys ROCK! :worthy:
