Is there a really nice way to decorate a 2.5g betta tank?

I don't have a filter or a heater for him. His water temp is always at least 72-73 degrees, but I would imagine that he'd love it at 78. I've been searching all the pet/fish stores in my area for ones that would not be too big or intrusive but I haven't had any luck. I tried a Hydor mini-heater but the lack of precision and/or a fixed temp really bothered me, so I returned it. The dude at PetCo told me it isn't necessary to heat a betta tank, because they aren't very active fish and they can survive colder temps. I wanted to tell him off, but I just ignored it. Just because bettas can survive in cooler temps doesn't mean they should live in them.

I saw a tiny little Tetra filter at a pet store a week or so ago and I thought about getting it. Is it really necessary for a 2.5g tank? I do 25-50% water changes weekly or even twice weekly if I have free time.

Don't rip me apart too badly if this is a dumb question!

Hi again, Ange... that's not a dumb question at all. You're just a beginner at this, so you're not supposed to know all the answers yet. We all learn best through experience anyway and need to weigh carefully the advice we get from all different sources. That takes some time, as well.

Your instincts are dead right about the heater... and also about not wasting your breath to argue this point with some guy at a pet store. Keeping fish at the wrong temp for their species plays havoc with their metabolism. This can lead to illness, infection, other pathogens, and severely shorter lifespans.

The sponge filter should be easy and inexpensive to find locally. And if all else fails, you could post a "want to buy" ad here in our classifieds forum. Lots of our members have used equipment they can sell or trade and who know a lot about small tank setups. Adding some filtration to the tank will help keep your parameters stable and to avoid poor water quality issues. As you can, you should also invest in a reliable liquid test kit (such as API) to monitor your water parameters on your own.

As you read up more on fishkeeping, you'll soon find out that smaller tanks are much more difficult to maintain than large tanks. This is because they have seriously wide swings (which will unduely stress a fish)... irregularity in temperature... just about anything you might want to measure is going to vary a lot and be unstable. Also, just because the water looks sparkling clean this does not mean the water quality is adequate for the health and well being of your fish.

Without a heater and proper filtration, you might as well be keeping this betta in a 2.5 gallon bowl. And... while you will find many people who debate this point by saying it's okay to keep a betta in a small bowl, those same people will usually tell you they've had great success with their betta this way for the last 2-3 years.. or so. The fact remains... a betta's potential lifespan if kept under proper conditions is 6-7 years. Some have even been known to reach 8-10 years of age. This is something you won't see happen with a betta that lives in a bowl or small tank without a heater/filtration.

Keep us updated with new photos and info about your setup and your lovely fish. Have fun and enjoy the hobby... and, by all means, keep asking all the questions you might have. Doesn't matter at all whether they're dumb ones or not.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the info. I'll pass by the store again and pick up that little filter when I can. And you were right about the plant. I buried it pretty deep and it's starting to wilt. I've pulled it up a bit and all I can do now is hope for the best.

Any recommendations for tiny heaters/filters?

The only dumb Question is the one not asked. If you don't ask you can't learn and not learning is the dumb part.

Lookin good hope its not as tempermental as my 3 gl.

Well, tomorrow I'm heading to a different LFS in my city that I just found out about. Hopefully they have what I am looking for in the never ending quest to improve my betta's living conditions! Hooray!

get a heater if possible, 25w will work, get some java moss!! my betta loves to chill on in and plays in it its funny to watch, my java moss is like a jungle and he loves it, ill attach a picture of my 2.5 which has a Red Sea Nano Filter, i'd recommend that filter its small, quiet and makes the water crystal clear

the tank with the blue rim and natural gravel is the 5 gallon betta, it has live plants, moss ball, and lots of java moss!!
the 2.5 is the one with black gravel and sword plant on the left with a little pot thingy, and not in the pic i recently got a moss ball..java moss ftw

and the last pic is my friends 5 gallon betta tank with anacharis and moss ball!

Nice tanks there, gentlemen!

Thanks for the advice. I ended up buying a Tetra 3i Whisper filter, and it's garbage, for my tank at least. It's way too big and ugly. The bottom of the filter's air pump receiver-thingy-majigger had to be at least an inch above the gravel, but the thing is almost a foot long! I left the filter sticking out of my tank to accommodate this, but it was just too much for me to handle. I'm returning it as soon as I can. Lars had a lot of fun while I was setting it up though. He was very curious and swam in and around my hand, the filter and the tubing. He even nibbled on my hand a couple of times!

I got a Tetra heater as well. It's 50w and it seems a bit large. I had to shuffle a few things around to make it fit, but I guess it will work. It's the smallest heater I could find in my area out of all the stores I went to.
