I have been having problems with my penguin 100, so im going to talk to tech support tomorrow to see if they cant some how remedy the problem. now if they cant, my question arrises.

is there such a thing as too powerful of a filter? now i have a 20 gallon long tank, if i were to get an emperor 400 would that be bad? i mean would it create too much current?? or would i be better off going with a 250? there isnt really a big cost difference between the 400 and the 100 so money isnt an issue there.

You know when there's too much current if your fish or other inhabitants are affected. For example, if your fish have a hard time moving against the current and are getting knocked around. If you have soft corals, they will start to get torn up by strong flow probably before the fish are affected.

I'm a big fan of overfiltration. The cutoff point of "too much" is when the current generated is making life less comfortable for your aquatic wards :)

so how about like the emperor 280?

You said this was for a 20 gallon long aquarium.
i know, but i was looking to over filter :p:

I actually have a Penguin 200 on a 20 gallon long, and I think it is plenty of current, borderline excessive. All of the food particles get pushed against the back glass.

I don't think you'd want anymore.
