no no no and no. Brothers or not, as they age, they will fight. Planted tank or not, they will manage to find each other with disastrous results on one or both fish. Don't do it because even if there is a slim chance it can work, why risk the life of either fish, especially if you consider them so beautiful. I think if you tried it, it'd be one cruel experiment.

How about setting up two five-gallon tanks side-by-side and then putting one betta in each?

ok, so i think i will only go to the lfs purchase 1 male and a couple of females.what are the females like with there tolerances?

Males can also be aggressive towards females, so I would recommend only females in the same tank. I keep tham myself and female bettas are just as great as male bettas.
My females are deep blue and an iridescent white/peach.
They really are nice looking fish.

Females can be in any peaceful community tank. They don't generally do well with other semi-aggressive fish that occupy the same territory as they do, but everything else is fine. Best to get a small group (4) because they will establish a pecking order, and unless there are enough fish to spread out the aggression you may lose one.
