I know it's silly but one of my oscars drove me nuts. I had two small oscars in a 10g while my 55g was cycling. After a few days, the red oscar became really territorial and constantly nudged and even bit my tiger oscar. Initially he only did that under his rock but then he must have thought he owned the frigging tank. I thought that sort of behavior was harmless until the tiger started taking some physical damage. My girlfriend would tap on the glass to break them up but after 2 seconds, the red oscar would be well on his way to abuse my tiger. Also, my tiger is a pushover too!! Finally, yesterday I had no choice but to transfer them both to the 55g earlier than planned. Now they have more room and haven't fought yet. However, if that happens against in the future, can I do anything to stop or discourage that? More toys, different diets maybe (right now their main meals are flake food and pellets).

Hmm, thats tough. always a gamble.

I once had a fish that did something alot like this. After being in a 55 gallon (like yours) I moved him into a 10 gallon feeder tank I had set up. He absolutely hated being in that tank. I kept him in there for about a month. When I moved him back into the 55 gallon he behaved like an angel.

If he acts up in the future maybe you can try that (unless he eats your danios in your 10gal)... that's really the only thing I can think of.

perhaps some dither/target fish could help... but this is just the natural pecking order of cichlids showing through. it's not that surprising.

Many species of fish will exhibit aggression when not given enough tank space. I don't think fish, even oscars, possess enough intelligence to associate any kind of discipline with a desired action. I would'n't be surprised if after a few months you see aggression again in the 55...thats not really enough room for two full-grown oscars.

SUre...

Just have to dress up in black leather and wield a mean whip...

Sorry; in a smart-aleck mood all of a sudden...

Haha... sorta.

from what I've read... dither fish usually refers to a school of fish or a fish which are not scared to swim out in the open. this sometimes brings scared/timid fish out into the open space once they see that it is safe.

target fish are a group of fish or single fishes which are used to spread the harrassment that another fish may dish out.

both words more or less mean the same thing. just sorta different scenarios.

FYI - You're going to need a much larger tank in the future to house two oscars and a pleco.

Space was probably the reason for aggression in the 10g and it will eventually happen again in the 55.

I will eventually get a bigger tank when the time comes. Right now, I'm just focusing on the problem on hand. I thought about putting a small fish in there so if my oscars feel the needs to "express" themselves they would have a target but that just seems cruel.

No there is no way to discipline a fish.

However , if you want to give them a taste of thier own medicine put a Convict in with them... the Convict is much smaller than they are, but when an oscar goes to pick on him he swiftly gets the crap kicked out of him.

Actually I'm not really suggesting you do that, but it's true...
