is there such a thing as too much circulation?

Depends on the fish.

Tall flat fish tend to like slow water (gouramis, discus).

Torpedo shaped fish can do faster water.

Fish with flat bellies that are triangular in cross section (catfish, loaches) are built to live in stronger currents.

Carpguy nailed it - you need to match the current to the fish, or the fish to the existing current - either direction works.

Plus, you do need to be aware that manufacturer's listed output figures are tightly defined test conditions. Real world figures are a fraction of that.

Scharf, you're basically turning over your tank 14.5 times per hour (by manufacturers' standards, anyway). What are you keeping in that tank?

I think that the filtration will be all right for them, then...I just wanted to make sure that you didn't have fish which couldn't handle current.
