I purchased a 120 gallon oak with oak stand lights glass tops brand new for $540 out the door I purchased gravel filters and driftwood and plants etc. for a total of less than $850.
Way more than I paid for mine, and WAY more than I'm asking for the reef ready 120's I'm selling. I wouldn't want anything from a previous tank if I didn't know the owner quite well--who knows what the wood was exposed to.
Shop around, there are better deals out there. Check the newspaper classifieds everyday. You will find some real good deals occasioanly but you got to call quick. I got my 72 gallon Oceanic Bowfront with stand, top, eheim filter, lights, fish (Trade them in at the LFS for 70.00), timers, power strips and all for 250.00 and it was only a year old.
There are alot of nice people out there that drop lots of cash on new equipment and then sell it a year later when they get bored or frustrated with the hobby. This is great for the patient hobbyist.

any non-porous material in the tank can be sterilized with bleach, like glass, solid plastic ornaments, etc. wood and porous stones or cloth ornaments (silk plants) can be treated and washed with vinegar. gravel should be replaced. there's just too much junk that can get into the gravel that would be such a pain in the butt to get out its probably just not worth it. filters can also be cleaned with vinegar, the sponges replaced. there's really not much in an aquarium that can't be cleaned and sterilized and re-used. mostly just gravel and filter sponges.
If it's from petsmart, the wood ornament is probably plastic or something else but not wood. I missed the best deal today...
