I was thinking today about the new talk I will be purchasing soon and how I would plumb it...

How about this - insert a false wall inside the tank at the back that acts as a large overflow and have two holes drilled near the bottom on the back of the tank.

Is there any disadvantage to having such a large overflow? It might be too noisy, but that can probably be worked around. I think it would be cool to look into the tank and see water flowing down the back wall.

Your opinion/comments will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Chris

I've really got the tank design/build ideas swirling in my head as well. My only thought is that you would be cutting down on space in the main tank that might not be needed for the overflow. I guess what I'm saying is why build the overflow larger than necessary for proper flow and take up tank space?? My feeling is that if the the overflow intake is smaller, the more it will pull across the top of the water. I figured this out from studying our pool skimmer :)

I've seen cube style tanks on Ebay that are similar to what you are suggesting. As a matter of fact the guy that builds them is about 10 miles from me. I can't really tell by the photos how long the actual overflow intake is but the idea is similar. He makes larger tanks as well but this is all I found today:

I'll probably hook up with him after I get done with my trade shows in early Feb. I'd still like to build my own though.

I think you would be right to say that it would be noisy. All that water gurgling down the drains, unless you installed a standpipe, but in that case you would lose the cascading water effect.

FL Knifemaker is right about the smaller the opening taking more off the top.
