Good morning;

There is something that has sprouted in my work tank, a 10 gallon planted tank with white clouds, mollies, and platys.

It looks pretty neat, but if it's something that is not good for the tank, I won't hesitate to yank it out.

Can anyone help me ID this please??

It was suggested that this might be a variation of bladderwort? But I haven't found any pics of bladderwort that looks quite like this type.

Looks like it could be staghorn algae. Do a search on the forum for staghorn and see if it jives with the photos and threads you dig up.

Thank you Harlock. It IS staghorn algae, so I guess I'll be pulling out as much as I can from the tank this afternoon, and giving the plants that it was attached to a weak bleach bath later in the week.

Too bad, it was a cute little plant too.

I'm pretty sure that's not algae. I have some of it growing in Riccia that I got a couple of weeks ago but I haven't identified it yet. Unless yours is different than mine it is some type of plant.

Yes Bill. I found out for sure that it was a form of bladderwort, not an algae but a plant. I'm going to put a huge prune on it, and see if I can't contain it for awhile...if not, I'll remove it.

I wonder if it could be this - Nitela flexilis, common name Stonewort: "http://www.plantgeek.net/images/plantpics/nflexilis2.jpg" or here's another picture: "http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?liveplantsf&1120361400". First reference identifies it as a microalgae but not a bad one for the tank. I haven't let mine grow out so I'm not sure but it looks darn close.

If you see this stuff growing in your tank, pull as much out as you can as this will infest plants such as java moss and java fern root and cannot be completely removed. I saw one strand in my tank and thought i would leave it in there and before i knew it I had to remove all my java moss and spend hours tring to remove it from roots and other plants. do yourself a favor now and remove it.
