is this ammonia ok?

hello im currently doing a fishless cycle. im plannin to use this all purpose lemon ammonia to start off the bacteria. now i looked at the active ingredients it says: "ammonium hydroxide, perfume, dye, contains no phosphorus"

will the perfume or dye be a problem?

i have a 10g tank, how much should i put in to maintain 5ppm?
 
I'm no expert, but I wouldn't. The perfume is a volatile and will probably go away, but there's no telling what the dye is. I'd just throw some fish food in there and let it decay naturally, that should produce plenty of ammonia. I've also heard of people using a shrimp, but standard household ammonia would work too.

As for the 5ppm... for a ten gallon tank it would be about 10 milliliters or 1/3 of a US ounce.
 
Use only pure ammonia, that contains no perfume and no phosphate. As a guideline, shake the bottle and see if it foams. If your ammonia foams, its not good to use in your tank because it has additives, pure ammonia won't foam. I used Goldex household ammonia and had great results cycling my 2 tanks fishless.
 
I wouldnt use it......

perfume and dye = bad stuff
 
Try looking for some at an Ace Hardware if you have one close... "Janitorial Strength Formula" comes in a gallon jug and would probably last you forever :)

wow it does foam, thanks a lot for the help guys.
 
ammonium chloride will work too, and is somehow safer/better, but I cant remember the specifics on that.

0.11g of powder will bring 50 gallons of water to 5ppm ammonia.
