Is this fish store right??

I was at a fish store around a week ago and I noticed they had some tropical fish in colder water, the woman said that she was slowly getting them used to cold water so they can be used as cold water fish.
It didn't sound right to me, can this be done? I'd never want to do it, but it got me wondering.
 
They will survive fine in coldwater. However, it will make them more susceptable to disease and other problems. Fish can survive in a wide range of temps but keepign the temp in the proper range will make your fish much better and healthier.
 
Well they might live in colder water, just like you could live in your home with the temperature set at 60. I don't think you would like that, but you could live like that. The temperature belong were they will be health. I like to keep my fish around 80. The sad thing is that is the same temp I keep my APT (I like it hot), so heating the tank is not that hard for me, and I think 80 is a good place to keep tropical fish at.
 
"Cold water" fish is kind of a mis-nomer. Cold water is in the 50s, cool water is the sixties(sub-tropical fish like weather loaches, gold fish) and then of course tropical. Certain fish like danios various carps, barbs etc have a wider temp tolerence say from 60-80 degrees and can easily be adapted to lower temps but consistancy is important here as these 'cool water' adaptable fish are not usually native to the low ends of their tolerated range as much as say the goldfish(native to sub-tropical tempatures).
 
well, it depends on the tropicals. For example: dojo loaches can survive in outdoor ponds, even iced over for the winter as long as there is a current. They do very well I've read and in fact will live over ten years or more.
And might in fact,live longer in cooler temps.
