Recently purchased this heater for one of my 10 gallon tanks and I paced it completley underwater where as with other heaters like this one I submerged them just pastthe minimal water line. I'm pretty sure its safe becuase if it shorted out I would prob have blown a breaker by now. I just want to make sure before I place my hand in there :) its a marineland visi-therm heater exactly like this one.

Marineland

If you can take it back. Do so. They are lousy heaters.
They stick on
They sometimes don't turn on
they crack far too easliy
they actually have fallen apart in tanks.

They are the most returned heaters at Big Al's.

If you can pick yourself up any of the following heaters they are light years better than the Marineland heaters.
Ebo Jager
Rena-Cal Excel
Hagen Tronic
ViaAqua Titanium

I work at Big Al's and see how many we (just our store) get back. We originally had them in the tanks in our store. So many broke or didn't work that it cost us a fortune (but well worth it) to change all 200 tanks from Marineland to the Renas and Ebo Jagers.

wow I didnt realize they sucked that bad....I've only heard good things about them so far. I've had a 300W in my 29gal (yea i know its a little big for that tank) but so far I've had good luck with it. Its not fully submerged tho the waterline is about halfway up the greay neck of the heater.

Hmm, I have both the Visi-Therm, and the Duel-Temp heaters by Marineland, and they have been great so far. Of course, I could just have been lucky too.

If you don't want to purchase a Marineland heater, go for Rena. I hear they're top notch.

Uh... Rena aren't really top notch. Ebo Jagers and Tronics are much better heaters.

If you look at the minimal cost differential between really good heaters (e.g., Ebo Jager) and really trashy heaters (e.g., Tetra Accura, Rena Excel), there really is no good reason not to buy the best. This is one area where with only spending a buck or two more, you go from a Yugo to a Lexus.

I have a Visi-Therm and it works great. Until I personally experience problems with a Visi-Therm I'll continue to endorse them.

If you ask enough people you will get a bad review on every single item you can buy.

other than online prices on heaters is much more than just a couple of dollars between cheap labels and the most expensive at least in the area I live I can't believe what they want for a ol hang on the lip pennplax at walmart even for a ten gallon tank.

edit

Every store here wants nearly 30 dollars for a 50 watt heater crazy.
