Hi everyone!

I currently have a few freshwater tanks a BW tank and a reef tank. I recently inherited a koi pond (landlord moved to arizona) and I know ZIP about koi so here I am.

Here in western NY the snow and ice seems to be gone for good and I took a stroll out to the backyard the other day just to see what was what yard/garden wise. My jaw hit the ground when I saw 5 koi were in there swimming around. That pond was a block of solid ice a few weeks ago!

Is that normal? or am i now in charge of indestructable mutant fish?

As I said I know nothing about koi so someone please enlighten me.

Thanks everyone!

Yep, that is normal. Depending on how deep the pond is, they fish will overwinter in the bottom and be fine in the spring. There is a ton of info online about Koi, so just start reading and enjoy the gift your landlord left you!

yep, totally normal. The pond must be at least 3-4 feet deep if they survived the winter. The thing is, when the water goes below 50, the fish come into a dormant state and they rest at the bottom of the pond while the winter takes over the top part, freezing it, snowing on it, all that. Congrats, that is quite an unusal find :D

Thanks for the feed back guys. and yes it's about 3 feet deep, best guess is it's about 30-35 gal of water.... now what do i feed these guys, what about filtration.... UGH! :read:
