Is this UV Sterilizer everything I need?

For what it would cost or less for all the parts to make that work. You could get a Hot Magnum...

And have better odds of clearing it up. Plus a desent all around filter in between times. ;)

I've never used one to it's best capabilities, because I haven't needed to. But for something like your case.
Use the Micron Cartrige(comes with it).
And, diatomaceous earth. Ask your LFS if they have any.

How I'd go about it...

Hang on the side of a 5g bucket or equivelent, whatever.
Turn on.
Pour in diatomaceous earth.
When water is clear, move filter to aquarium.

P.S.

I just serched the "diatomaceous earth". Like I said I haven't used it. But heard about it yrs ago. It seemed like a package used to come with the Magnum filters?

Anyway... I saw stuff about killing snails with it, etc.

So, Do read up on it, before using!

With all of that said. I'd just like to add.

I've used the Micron filter a few times. And it alone will do some major cleaning. If you were to let it run for a couple of days. All of the stuff it picked up by then, would just add to how fine of particles it catches. And sooner or later, it'll clog up enough to clear whatever that is in your tank.

Micron fitlers are nice, but if you can't figure out how to kill whatever is in the water, the micron filter is going to clog quickly, like every other day.

Feels like every other day there's a suggestion to spend more money. That being said, I run a Mag 350 w/ micron and a UV sterilizer on my 45g and have crystal clear water. However, I picked both up on craigslist for cheap cheap. I keep an eye on craigslist pretty much all the time watching for equipment I *might* need in the future and I grab the really good deals. (I actually just grabbed a GREAT deal from craiglist/fellow club member two days ago, picking it up today....don't want to jinx it, I'll share what all it is once I have it in hand).
