ok just woke up this morning and found that one of my tiger barbs haas 2 white dots on the edge of its caudal fin. the fish appears to be swiming normal , what should I do now?

thank you

yes, it could be ich, but usually there are more than just 2 spots. it may be that it got bettin, or accidentally rubbed up against something that took off a few scales. it's probably no big deal, but if it has been stressed out lately, or you put a stressed fish in the tank, it could possibly be the beginning of the ich...which is easily cured.

the spot is bigger than a grain of salt, almost like a little white ball...was going to try and raise the temp of the tank to 85F and should I use regular salt like table salt or do I need a special kind?

thankyou

Is this white spot - update

well just checked on my tiger barb and the two white spots that were on its tail are gone. I raised the temp to 81F now wondering if I was overeacting or what?

any ideas?

thankyou

If they're gone that quick, most likely it was some minor damage, or scrape as mentioned above. Since ich doesn't fit your description and most other true nasties won't just go away quickly, I'd relax and observe for a while.

NO, dont ever use regular table salt. NEVER. Buy aquarium salt from the fish store if you are going to put it in there. But i wouldnt worry, if the spots on it are gone, it was probably nothing. It happens.

Regular table salt, iodized salt, kosher salt, pickling salt aquarium salt etc. and pretty much any food grade NACL is fine. The only one with really questionable ingredients is aquarium salt since the ingredients aren't listed. I would imagine they aren't listed because the Aquarium salt people don't want you to know it's the same thing you sprinkle on your eggs at breakfast. Either way many of us who don't buy the hype, use table salt without any adverse effects, and without the high cost of aquarium salt.
