So my new Green Terror has finally settled into the 125 and like my Dempsey only gets chased periodically by the bigger polleni, which is great. If I only fit three fish in that tank I can live with it, although I'd still like to put my jewel and salvini in there if it works out once they're bigger.
The problem is I've been keeping my male rainbow cichlid in the 125 as well with plans to move him back to the 55 when the smaller fish get bigger. He's pretty tough and holds his own with the polleni and JD. But not the GT, who has decided he can't stand the rainbow. They're the same size but for the first time the rainbow has ran into a fish he just can't handle. The GT chases him all over the tank and has marked him up a bit. In a way it's just. The rainbow has always been a brute.
So, I'm now going to look at a used 29 that a guy in my area has for sale. It should be big enough for a rainbow since they only reach four inches. The thing is this will give me four tanks and I can't help but wonder if I'll ever stop buying them. It's exciting, but kind of scares me, too.
If there is one thing that is very clear to me about cichlids it's that you can't predict anything. The fish itself, not the species, determines compatibility and I have some really picky fish.
