I have a 50 gallon aquarium that I have switched from angels to goldfish. The have graced my home for nearly 3 months. However, I recently discovered that there is a FOUL smell coming from the tank. I would say almost a sour smell. This never happened in the 5 years of owning my angels. What do you suppose is the problem? My water changes are on schedule and I have no ammonia.

the Goldfish are a lot messier and more waste producing than the Angels were so your regimen should be stepped up from what it was when you had the Angels. How many goldfish are you talking about? What are the other parameters of the tank and how long has it been set up for the goldies without the Angels. In other words, when you started with the goldfish, how long was the inbetween time?
I did not wait after trading in angels came home with the goldies right away. My mother had a 55 with goldies and she never has had the problem of odor. Why would I have the sour smell and mom not? I only test for ammonia and ph. The fish store has tested my waters before and they are all in good measure.
I think it could be that the goldfish are producing so much more ammonia than the angels that the tank is in a small cycle and is trying to grow enough bacteria to keep up with your new fish.
