My goldfish is rubbing against some tubes in the tank and I'm worried about him. I got him as a birthday present a little while ago and really don't want him to get sick
Sounds like ich. I say that because one of the first symptoms is flashing (aka "itching"). Little white specks on the fins and body will confirm that it is, indeed, the ich parasite. Check out the article for how to treat: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39759
It was the first disease I ever had to treat. I wish I had this website back then, because I just used a commercial malachite green treatment and the dye turned everything in my tank green. I bought a big bottle of the stuff, it wasn't that effective, and it killed one of my favorite fish.
So now I'm not comfortable using chemicals in my tank.
Pat yourself on the back for joining this forum and asking for help :thm:
how big is your tank? nothing smaller than a 30g is sutable. preferably a 55g or greater. it sounds like ich. use a commercial treatment or do a salt treatment.
What he means is, goldfish are notorious ammonia producers. They need large amounts of water to avoid living in their own filth. In other words, it's definitely not OK to keep them in a bowl. They need lots of water and good filtration.
Just thought I'd help translate, fishcatch22. Remember, she's new to fishkeeping.
