its about time for me to purchase all of my stuff so i want to make sure i am getting good quality stuff so i dont have to keep spending so much $$$$ lol.

i went to petsmart and they had a 55 gal for 101.00 and the stand for like 159.00 so im really concidering that right now... i dont want to go too much smaller if i have too. i was thinking about either a octopus or a corallife protein skimmer... what u think? i was also looking at a marineland emperor 400 biowheel power filter... also how many powerheads do i need? and for the light i was checking out a nova extreme t5 10,000k daylight and 460nm actinic ... can i have anemone with that? i need all the help i can get ... i know its gonna cost some $$$$ and i just want to make sure im buying the right stuff..

thanks Mandy:fairy:

looks like the tank is a good deal though i am a fan of craigslist... you really don't need any filters with sw tanks, your LR is your filter... just need the PH's - you want at least 10x turnover for a FOWLR tank but sounds like your wanting reef so you want it closer to about 25x so in a 55g your looking at 55x25=1375gph turnover. as far as lighting for an anemone you really should think about getting metal halide lighting. again, look at craigslist or see if there is a local reef club in your area. as far as skimmers go im about to get an octopus myself so hopefully they're good :) don't forget your LR, you'll need about 1-2# per gallon of that and same goes for your sand. get a good aragonite sand. here's some good reading for you too http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/blog.php?b=21 thanks to grins :)

So what do you want to do? Salt Water/Fish Only or Reef (Anemones, corals, etc)? There is a huge difference in equipment and price between the two.
i want to start out with just fish only and live rock... but eventually want to add some anemone and maybe some coral...

Before deciding on that tank you really want to define what you want better. What fish are you really wanting to get? You don't want to buy that 55g and find out that the fish you want needs a 75g or more. You don't want to buy that stand and find out it isn't tall or deep enough to house a sump down the road if not right away. You don't want to spend money on a new light fixture not appropriate for what you want in the near future when you could buy a used fixture for not much more that will support anything you want.

:iagree:

Be patient and figure out what you really want - e.g., if you really want a tang, a 55 g won't cut it for the long term. Save the money on the biowheel and invest it in more LR. For powerheads, have enough to have at least 10X the tank volume flow per hour for fish only; you can always add more/upgrade later if you want to add corals.

i want to get a pair of clowns, and a watchman goby, flame hawk . i wanted to get a tang but i decided i didnt have the space in my house for another tank considering im going on tank number 3 lol... i just want to keep em pretty simple for now. i am ordering 45 lbs of LR from liveaquaria.com
