I've got snails....how do i get rid of them

Nerite snails are much prettier to look at and don't lay eggs in fresh water.

Not true. They lay eggs all over the place. At least mine do, although I've never seen anything result from it. Apparently, there's some kind of nerite that is actually capable of breeding in fresh, although most require brackish for breeding.

That said, if your plants' issues are resolved so they're not dieing, there won't be as much food for the snails, and they'll population control themselves down to a manageable number. And, as you've already said, no copper, unless you've got a place to put your RCS until all of the copper is removed.

they're big slobs about it and sometimes place them on the front glass panel...

edit: it's a big pane in my glass :woot:

Meximan Honey: The snails will not eat your plants. Just let them be. Pick off a few here and there if you do not like them, but they do more good then you think.

..don't over feed and the snails will not reproduce...no food = no babies ..I had ramshorns and these guys in my tanks for years..cut back on feeding and boom...gone only a few hardy adults stuck around but none of the babies can get enough food to live.

If you want it done faster...cut back on food and get a big mystery snail..they are faster than bladder snails and will eat up all the food before they can get to it..and they don't reproduce like normal snails. They need male and female and eggs are laid in large pink clutches above the water..where you can scrape them off and throw them away.

Best Wishes.

I know how it feels to be over run with snails. There is a very simple solution to CONTROLLING the population to the point you will hardly ever see a snail. Go out and buy yourself a skunk loach. They stay small compared to clown loaches but do a fantastic job. I got one at an auction and with in 1 week I noticed a HUGE difference. 3 weeks later he took care of all of them and I only see 1 or 2 once in a great while. make sure to get a SKUNK loach as a clown loach will get to large for your 10 gallon.

There are also crawdads. They love escargot. Of course they love vegies too. It wouldn't be long before all you would have is a fat crawdad.

I agree with most of what has been said....

DO
-cut back feeding
-get the plants healthy
-trap and remove (if you so wish) just throw a piece of lettuce or zucchini in the tank at night and before the lights come on in the morning remove it with the snails and repeat as you please.

DON"T
-add another critter to take care of another critter (I would certainly stay away from loaches if you want your shrimp)
-squish them (this adds more food for the other snails, bad cycle)
-use copper in your tanks ever. It absorbs into the silicone and can leach for years. Better to just stay away.

Things that I would like to agree with....
-snails are actually helpful for planted tanks if kept under control
-no food=no babies
-most snails do not eat plants but do eat the decay (plant or animal)
-keep the plants healthy first and everything else will follow
-nerite do lay eggs but they are not able to hatch in fresh water
-nerites and briggs are pretty and will out compete "pest" snails but only add them if you want them for them (personally i would not add snails to a shrimp tank again because they make a lot of waste and require more food to be put into the tank. But that'e just me and for breeding purposes)

I think I hit everything I wanted to hit. :D
