hey all! :)

I've got 3 6-8" Jack dempseys in a 30 gallon tank.. They seem to fight a lot... But i don't want to get rid of any of them.. One of them seems to be breeding every couple months and the pair really beats up the 3rd guy bad every time. Is there a good dither fish I can put in the tank to help?

Thanks.

oops.. by holding i meant breeding :D used to my africans.

3 Dempseys in a 30Gallon. what are them measurments of the tank? It must be a tight fit. WAY WAY WAY TOO SMALL. NO do not add any fish if anything take the hurt one out. Or get a LARGER tank. I even think a 55 will be small for 3 adult dempseys.

Agreed, adding fish could and probably would only make things worse. the aggression is most likely due as much to the extremely cramped space as it is to general personality. 3 Depmsey I would reccomend 75g minimum. but definately no more fish.

Danios are normally great dither fish but as was mentioned this tank just is too small for those fish and adding more will ending up causing more harm than good. And normally it is the giant danio that is used.

As said. In a tank that small, Dither fish probably won't help, because the aggression is most likely due to a complete lack of space to swim. adding more fish will not help. furthermore a dither fish that has no where to run to will not last a day. the idea is a fast moving fish that can get away from trouble when targeted. in a tank that small the Danios won't be able to get away. Yes Danios are a good dither fish, no it's not a good idea to put them in that little tiny tank with great big fish that will eat them.

It is not going to work Jinks. Like everyone is telling you the tank is to small for 3 JD even if they were not breeding. Zebra danios would not be good target fish for JDs no matter what size tank you have because they would eat them. Take the abused one out or get a bigger tank.

While I fully agree with everything you are saying long time, I thought we were talking giant danios, zebra's would be food in about 2 seconds, of course in a tank that small anything would be food pretty quickly.

I think if you got a 4th Jack dempsey and put it in you would be fine, maybe get another female to even out the agression. Ad a rock for it to hide under too!
