Jack Dempsey gasping/swimming erratically

Really? I thought the males had pointy fins and the females had rouded fins?

Hrm, after checking out some websites it does look I might have a female. Hard to tell though. My JD is pretty pale in the pic before. He\she is darker with more color now.
Here's another pic:

It is a female JD by the way.

How can you all tell? From the amount of Blue or the overall color? I've seen JD's at the fish store that are almost black with blue sparkles.

Looks female to me, and a nice looking fish - if the first pic is the screwy behaviour, I wouldn't worry about it.

First pic was of her yawning.

She hasnt acted like I've mentioned since I mentioned it so I think it could have just been the nitrite spike that could have made her act weird. The tank has been running a month now and didnt realize that the full cycle is about 5 weeks. Could be a possible reason why she was acting like this.

The video doesnt represent what my cichlid was doing. She just yawns while acting calm. When she was freaking out she really freaked out. Splashing at the top of the water, swimming up and down the tank like a madwoman :P

I'll just keep an eye on the nitrites and monitor her behavior and go from there :)

Question. My JD seems to be paler than the ones I see at the fish store. I purchased some darker gravel to hopefully help her get darker in color but from the pic I posted you can see its not working. Is there anything else I can try to make her colors darker? I have 3 different types of food for her. Hikari gold pellets, Nutrafin Max pellets and Ultracolor. I just bought the other two so hopefully this will help too.
