Fry will often nip at slime coat on adults. So, in a way eating them yes. Not that unusual.

forgot about that one - I 1st saw it in a clutch of Flowerhorns I bred back in 2008 but I haven't seen it from any of the other species I have bred since then. Good thing to point out, as it can leave the parent open to infections if it goes on for long enough time

It's also hypothesized that the fry may get gut bacteria and antibodies from it. As well as extra protein. It's a cool behaviour, but less goes on much longer in tanks than in the wild, which can cause damage in the long run.
