......////.jack demsey question.////..........

but the person that has the jd said to me that she has him in a 40 with some goldfish. he is 4 years old to and also said to me a couple more fish would do well . im in a delema becasue the jd is so cool looking but i dont want it to be a prison so i will probablly not get him.

i dunno about this one man... i have had jd's and after about 1 year from purchase they all have exceeded the 7 inch mark... I think if you have a 5-6 inch jd after 4 years old he or she has probably been in too small of a tank its whole life... 1 jd needs at least 55gal if not more all to itself!!! ok now i read that its been in a 40gal which is in fact WAY to small!!!!!!!!!!!!!

alright thanks for ur opion

pets mart care guide sais that a way to see if its cramped or not is inch of fish for evey gallon. just saying not saying what u guys are saying is wrong

that's just a general rule. 2" either way ain't gonna hurt the tank.

but then why is a 6 inch jd bad?

i mean not good for it?

sorry for all my questions but i want as much info as i can

all im sayin is i havent seen any adult jd's under at least 7 in male or female??? you need a larger tank...

Nate, the one inch per gallon rule is not accurate at all. About the only thing it could be good for is very slim bodied fish. A fish has more than just length; it also has height and thickness. If that rule were followe, you could justify a 10" Oscar in a 10 gallon tank.

When picking fish, you are looking at the adult size of the fish when judging how many you can have.

Other issues are...

Their diet, compatibility with others, water conditions, how much swimming space they need, are they top/mid/bottom dwellers, do they need to be kept in schools, spawning habits, terriotorial needs.

It is a lot to take in. Sumthin fishy gave you some good combinations. Why not give one a try when you have looked/thought about it and develop some experience.
