I bought a female jack Demsey from my local fish store about 2 months ago. But I think the guy was wrong on it being a JD. The more I look at pics of Texas cichlids the more I wonder. And I'm not sure if it's a female or a male. It's about 4 inches long right now. If someone could help me I would greatly appreciate it.

I would put my money on Herichthys carpintis. Its kind of hard to say. The markings look very much like a carpinte which isnt the true texas cichlid. The body on the other hand is kind of short and Jack like. Most Carpinte's that I have seen have a very tall body to them.
Also your pic link was broken so here it a pic of your fish.

not a Texas and not carpinte .. body isn't deep enough. looks like a JD to me.

yes i would say jack dempsey

The markings look like both to me. The light blue spots look like a TX Cichlid's spots and the dark spots on the side make me think it's something else. I don't know.

i would say jack as well i wish i had a pic of my texas but i dont have one on the computer yet
