I have two jack dempseys and i wanted to know if i can have live plants in the tank with them. i dont want a completely planted tanks just a few... any thoughts?

I have what most would consider a moderate/heavily planted tank with not one rooted plant, and only 1.5 wpg of light. You would be surprised what you can do with anubius and java fern wedged in driftwood cracks. Give it some time and it will look beautiful.
Like Mooman said, java fern might work and will completely cover a log with 8 to 10 inch leaves within a year or two.
To prevent my oscar and Jack from digging I put a floating plant and ping pong ball in and they havnt dug up a plant since.
