Hi:

I have a 55 gallon tank with 4 yellow labs and a few male peacocks. I have two male jacobfreibergi. They have gotten along great until today and the one hunts down the other and fins are displayed and water goes flying.

Both are beautiful fish and I hate to lose either of them. Did I make a mistake by putting two males together in this tank? Do you think they will settle down and start getting along again?

I am presently rearranging all my rockwork, hoping this will make them find new territory.

The aggressive one is now in "fish jail" ( a breeding net)

I get more professional answers by asking my questions here and not at the pet shop.

one will always try to dominate the other. this "fish jail" if its in the same tank, is just building up for more aggro when he gets let out. are you sure they are both MALES? also are there ANY female peacocks in the tank?

Well,I am new to African Cichlids. I was going on advise from a breeder who ran the pet store.I just wanted a nice display tank of Africans and he told me I should have an all male tank then. He told me both the jacobfreibergi were male. They appear to be male by the bright coloring.

I have no female peacocks in the tank. I was told I would need at least 3 or more because they were harem breeders and there was a chance the male would kill the one female. The breeder also cautioned me about adding females because I would have interbreeding taking place because of the other male peacocks.

I guess I may have to find a new home for one of the jacobfreibergi.

In a 55g, you have room for several more male peacocks....it will diffuse the aggression....an all male peacock display tank is very cool - there is a 100 gallon one at my friend's fish shop.
