Jag acting a little weird?

I have one 10" jag in a 55 gallon tank. Its a female since it has a more curved top fin. This fish has been alone in the tank for 3+ years and has only seen feeder fish. The tank is by itself in the basement and the jag can't see any other live fish.

In the past few days the fish has been digging in the gravel again, clearing off a large flat rock (which it has spawned near when I had the other jag), it has been rubbing against the same rock, and its vent is down.

So I'm wondering why this fish wants to spawn if it hasn't seen any other fish in years? It has been part of a breeding pair several years ago, but the male died 3 years ago.

Last, I know a 55 gallon is small, but would it due just for spawning? I was kind of thinking about looking for a male fish and putting them together just so they will spawn. After a week or so they could be separated. How risky is this?

I have tried to spawn cichlids (4 different species) several times before and it never worked. But now when there is only one fish, it wants to spawn. :-P

I female can and will lay eggs without a male present. Since this female is 10 inches big and has been alone for 3 years I don't think she will take kindly to any male in her tank no matter what size. Introducing a large male to that size tank is just calling for a disaster. I would just let her lay her eggs if she lays any.

Now there are hundreds of eggs but only one female jag. The limestone in the pictures is covered with eggs. It had diatom algae and the eggs turned the rock more white. Several eggs have even fallen off the rock and into the gravel.

Whats the minimum tank size to try and breed jags in?

I have no idea it's hard to say, but I would think it would be more than 100 gallons.

Jonathan, where are you located? I have a 10" male Jag that I am looking to sell.I had a pair, but the male killed my female last week due to her getting ready to lay eggs again with the 1 month old fry still being in the tank from the previous spawn. It was my fault.I should have taken the fry out the tank knowing she was getting ready to lay eggs again. Her stomach was swollen with eggs and her breeding tube was coming down.I am going to just raise the fry now and sell the male.Let me know if you are interested in purchasing him for $30.Pics available if you want.

I am in Cincinnati. Thanks for the offer but I don't have a large enough tank either. I don't think I can swing a tank over 100 gallons at the present time. I only have a 55 gallon tank. What size tank were you using?

I have had over 10 pairs of 10" managuense pairs over the years and have NEVER kept them in anything larger than a 40 gallon long.I have never run into any problems and the pairs always spawn several times. You would be ok with a 55.I think the tank would be too small if the pair doesn't get along, but if they breed, they will form a strong bond and be ok.

I'm going to look for something more than a 55 since this fish has killed other fish in that tank.

Has anyone ever tried breeding cichlids outdoors in the summer? I was thinking that it might be cheaper to build a pond than buy a 100+ gallon tank. I don't really have any room in my house for it either. I could take the fish inside for the winter. In the midwest the temperature is in the low 90's most of the summer. I would really like to raise some younger jags.
