Java fern for Jewel fry?

I have a community tank and my jewel cichlids look as though they are ready to spaw. I don't have any other tank to put the fry in so would a few java ferns help protect just a few of them from my other fish?

I don't really wan't any more jewels but it would be cool if one or two survives.

I plan on having a cichlic tank next year and I will get a breeder/fry tank then.

I don't think the ferns will provide much cover unless that are fairly well established. Mine were barely cover for an adult fish when new, but are now fairly filled in and thick. Java moss might be a better choice, if you can pick some up.

I think there is an LFS around here that has some. Do they need lots of bright light?

Neither the moss or the fern requires high lighting. 2 WPG is good--and I have some of both that are thriving with less.

I went to petsmart and petco and the only lights that fit in my hood were 15 watts. I need about 100 watts to have 2 WPG.

Do I have to get a new hood. What about HIgh Pressure Sodium lights. There are great for plants but the get hotter that hell.

unless your a cooling DIY'er get a fkorcent, although not the most elite light, i have a 48 jebo, gives me 2 watts per gallon and i could bump that up to 220 but my fuish dont hang with that.
