Hey everyone! well, after taking out the java fern from the substrate because I was told the rhizomes would rot, I noticed that there was thread wrapped around each bunch... whats the point of this? Can I just unwrapp them and then root them individually?

How does Java fern grow into more plants?

java fern will either make new plants off the leaves (you will see brown dots form and then leaves and roots) or new leaves off of the rhizome which can be split.

Yes, you can separate the plants that are tied together in a bunch. To attach them to driftwood, a rock or whatever, you can either tie them on with thread, fishing line, or a rubber band until the roots attach.

so can i take them apart - out of the thread?

yep...I would tie them with thread to a rock or driftwood rather than rooting in substrate. they will eventually attach themselves to the rock. It keeps the rhizome from rotting and makes it easier to move for rearranging/tank cleaning too.

I do have 1 or 2 bits planted in gravel, they seem to do better tied to a rock.
