java fern root question

My java fern has attached itself securely to the rock I tied it to but now it had three roots that seem to be reaching for structure...these roots have now grown to be 7 to 8 inches long. Is it ok to cut these rougue roots or should I try wrapping them around the rock?
 
I cut any of the brown roots that are floating around like that if they bother me. The plant will grow more.

You can cut extending pieces of the green rhizome to make new plants though (as if the plantlets they put off on their leaves are not enough!)

I've been wondering about this for a while. Have you actually cut a rhizome and had success? How much did you cut & how much did you leave?
 
Leave at least 3 leaves on the rhizome and you should be o.k...rather the fern should be o.k. :)
 
very dumb question...

What is a rhizome, I keep reading about it, but nothing describes what it is. I also have the java fern, and it has one "daughter" plant still hanging on.

Just new to this, so I have a lot to learn.
 
thanks for the answer. I'm going to need to have someone point it out to me, because I do not see a "rhizome" on my java fern.

the rhizome is like a bulb. it's usually horisontal, with the leaves growing out the top, and the roots growing out the bottom.

You can kind of see it on my anubias at the bottom.

I wasn't sure what they were either, then when I got the plant I instantly knew what it was when I saw it.
