java ferns seem to go for quite a nice sum at the LFS... 40 bucks for a 8x8" matt... 
they always just fall off for me, but I have just yanked them off before, and never had one die. I have one that has it's roots growing inside a hollow driftwood, that's doing ok, but the other one, in my 15, is basically just wedged into the Y of a branch, and it's roots are free floating, that one has gotten 4-5 times it's original size in a matter of 3 months or so.
