Java Ferns

IME the glazing on ceramics is too smooth to truly attach to. I use fishing line to tie my ferns to new wood or non porous surfaces.

In the case that your ceramic decoration IS glazed to a smooth finish, then no. However, if there is no glaze present, then the surface should have enough of a porous texture to allow for attachment. Just gotta make sure that the surface texture isn't completely smooth. Good luck ~Angela

Well I have a java fern that has attached to a ceramic glazed decoration. It did take awhile but the roots have completely entangled it. If you are in a hurry then I would agree that it isn't a great place to attach them.

A few dabs of silicon sealant would also help out. Just dab it on and let it dry. That'll give the "roots" more places to tangle.

I've seen sealant smoothed all over and then rocks pressed into it too. That really makes for a nice attaching surface.

I think I'll wait until I get my driftwood..

Will it hurt the "rooting system" to plant them into the gravel or should I just let them free float, well get pushed around by the fish, all over the tank?

They are fine to float. If you push them down in the gravel don't push them too far. The top of the rhyzome needs to be above the rocks. The roots are fine under the gravel, IME.
