Java moss and driftwood

does java moss need driftwood or some surface to grow on or will it just grow?

it will just grow...however its usually preferred to anchor it to contain the mess.

I either just pull out clumps, or use surgical scissors to trim it up. I toss the clippings into a vase I keep in my windowsill.

If the java moss just floats around, it could clog the intake of your filter. Happened to me many times.

I use fishing line or sewing thread.

If you've tied your java moss up to the driftwood, it'll attach itself after a while as it spreads. Then your driftwood will turn into a mass of java moss, and you can trim it up to match what you want. Pretty cool plant, and you can usually trade your clippings in to the lfs...
